⚠️ MTD applies to you now. You need to be using MTD-compatible software and filing quarterly updates. If you're not already set up, let's sort it quickly — book a free call and I'll get you compliant without any stress.
📅 MTD will apply to you from April 2027. You have time — but getting set up early means no last-minute scramble. It's worth starting to think about it now, especially if you're close to the £50,000 threshold.
MTD doesn't apply to you yet. The threshold drops to £20,000 in April 2028, so you may need to comply in the future. It's worth keeping an eye on — and getting set up early is much easier than a last-minute rush.

What does MTD actually mean for you?

The short version: more regular submissions, the right software, and no more year-end scramble.

📱

MTD-compatible software

You'll need to keep your records digitally using software that connects to HMRC — spreadsheets alone won't cut it. FreeAgent is fully MTD-compatible, and I can get you set up and trained on it quickly.

📆

Quarterly updates

Instead of one annual tax return, you'll submit a summary of your income and expenses to HMRC four times a year. It sounds like more work — but with the right software it's straightforward.

An end-of-year declaration

You'll still complete an end-of-year finalisation — but it's much simpler when your records are up to date throughout the year. No more frantic January scramble.

💸

The same tax, filed differently

MTD doesn't change how much tax you pay — it changes how and when you report it. The good news is that better records throughout the year often means fewer surprises at tax time.

Based in Milton Keynes. Working with sole traders across the UK.

I'm Claire, and I work remotely with sole traders everywhere — from Milton Keynes and Northampton to London, Manchester, and beyond. You don't need a local accountant to get great accountancy support. Everything is handled online, and getting set up for MTD is straightforward no matter where you're based.

Common questions

The things people ask me most about MTD.

You need to sign up for MTD for Income Tax — it doesn't happen automatically. HMRC will write to you if you're affected, but waiting for that letter isn't a great plan. I can handle the sign-up process for you as part of getting you set up.
Not on their own, no. You need MTD-compatible software to submit your quarterly updates directly to HMRC. Some bridging software can work alongside spreadsheets, but it's more hassle than it's worth — FreeAgent is a much cleaner solution and works out cheaper than most people expect.
HMRC operates a points-based penalty system for MTD. Each missed submission earns a point, and once you reach a threshold, you'll receive a £200 fine. Points reset after a period of compliance. The best way to avoid this is to have a proper system in place — which is exactly what I help you set up.
Not necessarily — but you do need the right software and a basic understanding of what you're submitting and when. Some of my clients manage their own books perfectly well using FreeAgent; I just make sure everything is set up correctly and check in on them. My Guided package is designed exactly for that.
Yes — especially if your income varies year to year or you're growing. The threshold drops to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028, so it may catch up with you sooner than you think. Getting set up now means it's one less thing to worry about later.
Completely remotely — and that's how most of my clients work with me. I'm based in Milton Keynes but help sole traders across the UK get set up for MTD without anyone needing to travel anywhere. Everything is handled digitally, which is rather fitting given what MTD is all about.
